No. You can submit individual chapters or scenes as you write them. LineMind is designed to help you polish your work as you go, whether you're in early drafts or doing a final review before submission.
No. You can run up to 3 free diagnostics with no account at all. Creating a free test-author account gives you more runs, and verifying your email unlocks the full Pro diagnostic suite.
LineMind is currently in its test-author phase with free early access. Pro features (unlimited diagnostics, saved reports, Story Memory) will be available when paid tiers launch. Early contributors may receive 1 free month of Pro.
No. LineMind is designed specifically for fiction. The diagnostics are calibrated for narrative craft — pacing, character development, stakes, emotional continuity — not argument structure, informational clarity, or persuasive writing.
Uploading Your Manuscript
- .docx (Word documents)
- .txt (plain text)
- .md (Markdown)
- Maximum file size: 5 MB
- Maximum word count: 10,000 words
- Minimum: 50 characters
You can submit anything from a single scene to a full chapter. Most authors find that 2,000–5,000 words provides enough context for meaningful, specific feedback. Shorter submissions may receive more general observations.
Yes. A paste box is available alongside the file-upload option. The system auto-counts words as you type or paste.
No. Files with embedded images will be rejected. Remove images and re-upload a text-only version.
Your manuscript belongs to you. Period.
- Your text is private. We do not share, sell, or use your manuscript for any purpose other than generating your requested diagnostics.
- Your work is not used for training. Your manuscript is never used to train models or improve the platform.
- You retain all rights. Uploading your work does not grant us any ownership, licensing, or publication rights.
If you save a report, manuscript text is retained according to your Prose Retention setting (configurable in Account Settings; default 30 days). Unsaved manuscripts are not stored beyond the diagnostic run. You can delete your data at any time.
The Workflow
- Upload or paste your text (a scene or chapter)
- Select a diagnostic — "Recommended" shows the top 5 based on a quick text analysis; "Browse All" shows everything
- Add context (optional but recommended) — genre, tone, character details, and diagnostic-specific fields
- View results — inline annotations, color-coded feedback, structured bullets organized by theme
If you're not sure where to begin, try one of the two free diagnostics:
- Cold Reader (Fresh Eyes) — simulates a reader encountering your chapter with zero prior context; great for spotting confusion and grounding issues
- Clarity, Rhythm & Micro-Craft Enhancer — line-level polish for flow, rhythm, and phrasing
You can also use the Recommended tab, which analyzes your text and surfaces the 5 diagnostics most relevant to your excerpt.
Think of Step 3 as giving an editor the brief they need to read your work fairly. The more you share about your manuscript — genre, voice, worldbuilding choices, stage of revision, specific concerns — the more tailored the feedback becomes.
Without context, the diagnostic can only respond to what's on the page. With context, it can evaluate whether your choices are working for your specific story and goals.
There's also an optional Prefill button that uses AI to auto-suggest context values from your text.
Yes. You can run as many diagnostics as you want on the same chapter or scene. Many authors find it helpful to see the same text through different lenses — for example, running both an Editorial Synthesis and a Genre-Savvy Beta Reader on the same opening chapter.
Diagnostics
Over 20, organized into four categories:
- The Editor's Desk — line editing, structure, character psychology, style, theme, pacing, dialogue, and more
- Simulated Beta Readers — five reader personas (Cold, Genre-Savvy, Emotional, Craft-Aware, Critical)
- Mock Publishing House — market positioning, chapter assessment, query hooks, manuscript readiness
- Editorial Packages — curated multi-diagnostic bundles
Two diagnostics are available without a Pro account:
- Clarity, Rhythm & Micro-Craft Enhancer — line-by-line polish for clarity, rhythm, and micro-craft
- Cold Reader (Fresh Eyes) — simulates a reader encountering your chapter with zero prior context
| Diagnostic | Focus |
|---|---|
| Clarity, Rhythm & Micro-Craft | Line-level polish, flow, unintentional repetition |
| Structural & Architectural | Chapter-level structure, scene logic, pacing beats |
| Character, Emotion & Psychology | Emotional logic, motivation consistency, arc progression |
| Reader Experience & Accessibility | Cognitive load, grounding, opening clarity |
| Style, Voice & Line-Level Craft | Stylistic authenticity, tonal coherence, rhythm |
| Theme, Symbolism & Resonance | Thematic clarity, motifs, setup/payoff |
| Sensory, Perceptual & Immersion | Sensory grounding, atmosphere, POV-filtered perception |
| Editorial Synthesis (Comprehensive) | Holistic overview across all dimensions |
| Dialogue Flow & Distinction | Voice distinction, subtext, pacing, exposition detection |
| Pacing & Momentum | Drag zones, rush zones, NMDI scoring (1–10 impact scale) |
| Repetition & Echo | Word echoes, structural repetition, AI-signature patterns |
| Voice Alignment | Character voice consistency across dialogue and interiority |
| Lineation & Rhythm | Line break function, paragraph rhythm, white space intentionality |
| Mood Fidelity | Sustained emotional tone, mood drift, intensity calibration |
Five AI reader personas that give you the kind of feedback a real beta reader would:
- Cold Reader — fresh eyes, zero context; flags confusion and grounding issues
- Genre-Savvy Reader — attuned to worldbuilding, genre conventions, internal logic
- Emotional Reader — focused on emotional nuance and psychological authenticity
- Craft-Aware Reader — sharp instincts for pacing, momentum, and narrative energy
- Critical Reader — the toughest reader, combining all dimensions for final-polish feedback
These evaluate your work from a market and submission perspective:
- Chapter Assessment — opening hook strength, character setup, premise clarity
- Market Positioning — identifying your niche, comparable titles, positioning strategy
- World-Concept — worldbuilding clarity, uniqueness, internal logic
- Query Hook — premise clarity and high-stakes identification for query letters
- Manuscript Readiness — overall polish and market-readiness before querying
Story Memory
An optional Pro feature that captures the structure of your story — not the words. You build it from your full manuscript, then enable story-aware diagnostics that understand your plot, characters, themes, and voice context across chapters.
When you enable Story-Aware mode during diagnostics, LineMind references this context to provide more relevant feedback. For example, if your protagonist's arc is about learning to trust others, diagnostics can evaluate whether individual scenes support or undermine that development.
- Book title and chapter structure
- Character roster, states, and arcs
- Relationships between characters
- Plot thread status
- World facts and terminology
- Voice fingerprint and a few short style exemplars (~15 words each)
Your full manuscript prose is not stored as part of Story Memory.
- Go to Projects (My Books)
- Click Create Project and enter book title, genre, and status
- Upload your manuscript (all chapters at once or incrementally)
- The system extracts structure, characters, plot threads, and voice
In Step 1 (Upload), after uploading your text, select which Project and chapter you're working from. The system automatically includes relevant context from earlier chapters.
Yes. For each chapter you can view and manually adjust character states, relationship maps, plot thread status, and world facts.
Yes. Deleting a project permanently removes all structural data. You can rebuild anytime by re-uploading.
Voice Signatures
A captured profile of your unique writing style — vocabulary, sentence patterns, tone, and aesthetic. Assign it to any diagnostic for style-aware feedback that acknowledges and preserves your distinctive voice.
- Go to Account > Voice Signatures
- Paste 500+ words of your writing, or import from a .docx/.txt/.md file
- The system analyzes and generates your signature
- Name it and optionally add notes
Vocabulary preferences, sentence structure and rhythm patterns, tone and emotional register, figurative language tendencies, POV habits, and pace/flow signature.
In Step 3 (Context), select your voice signature from the dropdown to inform the diagnostic feedback.
Revision Workshop
An interactive tool that generates craft-focused revision examples for specific passages. Available after running select diagnostics, it lets you jump from flagged issues directly to highlighted text with before/after examples.
Key distinctions:
- Examples are labeled "One Approach" to emphasize they're not prescriptive
- A Craft Insight appears before each example so you understand the why before the how
- The goal is to teach revision strategies you can apply throughout your manuscript — not to generate final prose
Study the technique, then craft a revision that fits your voice and vision.
Beta Reads
Beta Reader diagnostics run a single reader persona on one chapter. Beta Reads run multiple reader personas on selected chapters or entire manuscripts simultaneously.
- Go to Beta Reads
- Click New Beta Read
- Select your Project (manuscript)
- Choose reader personas (Cold, Genre-Savvy, Emotional, Craft-Aware, Critical)
- The system runs in the background — check progress anytime
Reports & Saving
Test-author and Pro accounts can save reports. Anonymous users cannot — results exist only during the session.
Click Save Report on the results page. The system stores the diagnostic feedback, your context fields, manuscript text (per your Prose Retention setting), and a timestamp.
Diagnostic feedback is stored indefinitely. Manuscript prose is retained per your Prose Retention Period (adjustable in Account Settings; default 30 days). You can manually delete reports anytime.
Yes. Click Email Report on the results page to send it to your registered email address.
Go to Account > All Reports. Reports are organized in tabs (individual diagnostics, analysis packages, novel-level reports, beta reads) with search and filtering.
Working with Professional Editors
LineMind is designed to complement professional editing, not replace it.
For authors: Use diagnostics to identify foundational issues before hiring an editor. You'll arrive with a cleaner manuscript, allowing your editor to focus on voice, nuance, and higher-order storytelling — where their expertise has the most impact.
For editors: When clients use LineMind before your engagement, they arrive having already reflected on structure, pacing, and clarity. This shifts the relationship from early-stage correction toward creative partnership and makes collaboration more productive.

A setting that controls how long manuscript text is kept alongside saved reports. Options: 30 days (default), 90 days, 1 year, or never auto-delete. Adjust in Account > Settings.
Test-author accounts have a 30-day access window. After expiration you can no longer run diagnostics, but saved reports remain viewable.
Go to Account > Settings > Delete Account. This permanently and irreversibly removes your account, saved reports, Story Memory, and all associated data.
Privacy & Data
- All manuscripts are transmitted and stored using industry-standard encryption
- Access to your work is restricted to you and necessary system processes
- We maintain regular security practices and follow best practices for data protection
- You can delete your manuscripts and associated diagnostics at any time
- AI Provider — manuscript text is sent for processing (not for training)
- Email Service — email address used for report delivery
- Mailing List (opt-in only) — email and name sent to newsletter provider
- No data brokers, advertisers, or unauthorized third parties
Structure only — characters, plot threads, voice patterns, world facts. Your full manuscript prose is not stored as part of Story Memory.
Technical data only: IP address, browser info, timestamps, and event data. Manuscript content is never written to logs.
Understanding Your Feedback
That's expected — and valuable.
LineMind shows you how readers might experience your work based on genre conventions, narrative structure, and craft fundamentals. If the feedback suggests a character's motivation is unclear, but you've intentionally written them as enigmatic, that's useful information. You now know readers might experience confusion, and you can decide whether that's the effect you want.
The revision choices remain entirely yours. The diagnostics are meant to inform your decisions, not dictate them.
No. LineMind provides diagnostic feedback only. It identifies issues and suggests directions but never rewrites your text or generates new prose in place of yours. The Revision Workshop offers revision suggestions labeled as one possible approach, but you always decide what to keep.
Every diagnostic is built with restraint guidelines: no rewriting, no content generation, no voice flattening. LineMind's goal is to help you see your work more clearly — not to reshape it. Use what serves you; set aside what doesn't.
Troubleshooting
- File exceeds 5 MB — remove images or split into smaller sections
- Unsupported format — use .docx, .txt, or .md
- File contains embedded images — re-upload without images
- Server error — try again or contact support
- Anonymous users: 3 free diagnostics used; create an account for more
- Unverified accounts: verify your email to unlock Pro diagnostics
- Test authors at 12 runs: wait for Pro tier launch or contact support
Expected runtime is 30 seconds to 3 minutes depending on chapter length and diagnostic complexity. Longer chapters and comprehensive diagnostics take more time. If it seems stuck, check My Reports for background progress.
Sessions expire after 30 minutes of inactivity. A warning appears before expiration. Log back in with your email and password to continue. Saved reports and Story Memory are not affected.
This can happen due to network timeouts or file issues. Click Resume Build to pick up where it left off. If the error persists, contact support.
Tips & Best Practices
Immediately. Verification unlocks 15+ Pro diagnostics and removes the 3-run limit. Takes about 2 minutes.
Once you have a multi-chapter draft. Story Memory enables story-aware diagnostics that understand plot context, character states, and voice consistency across your full manuscript. This feature is optional but becomes more valuable the longer you work on your book.
- Quick test: Upload a scene, run Cold Reader (free), no account needed
- Deeper feedback: Create account, verify email, run 2–3 Pro diagnostics
- Full context: Build Story Memory, run story-aware diagnostics on each chapter
- Polish: Use the Revision Workshop for line-by-line refinement
- Final check: Run Beta Reads with all 5 reader personas
